LD 2007, formally titled An Act Regarding the Prohibition of Online Sweepstakes Games, was enacted in April 2026. The Maine Gambling Control Unit states that the law became effective on July 29, 2026 and is codified in Title 8, Chapter 38.
Under the statute, an online sweepstakes game includes an Internet-accessible game, contest or promotion that uses a dual-currency system and simulates casino-style gaming. The statutory examples include slot machines, poker, table games, lottery games, bingo and sports wagering.
The law also provides civil penalties for operating, promoting or supporting prohibited online sweepstakes games. Consequently, operators have increasingly placed Maine on restricted-state lists or removed promotional currency functionality while leaving only non-redeemable entertainment modes available.
Maine also maintains separate regulatory frameworks for licensed casino gambling, fantasy contests, sports wagering and Internet gaming. Access to those regulated products should not be confused with unlicensed sweepstakes casino play.
