The NFL Week 5 start/sit decisions for 2026 are complicated by the first bye weeks of the season, several significant injuries and a Thursday Night Football matchup that could force fantasy managers to make early decisions.

Dallas offers several attractive Thursday options against Tampa Bay, while Jared Goff, Kyle Monangai, Michael Wilson and Isaiah Likely are among the players with appealing Week 5 situations. Jalen Hurts, TreVeyon Henderson, Dalton Kincaid and Denzel Boston carry more risk than usual.

Injuries also matter. Baker Mayfield remains sidelined for Tampa Bay, Lamar Jackson is dealing with an ankle sprain, and Philadelphia could be without Saquon Barkley while Tank Bigsby is already on injured reserve.

As of October 7, 2026: Practice reports and game statuses can change before kickoff. Check final injury news before locking lineups, especially for Philadelphia and Baltimore players.

Week 5 Start/Sit Format

The recommendations below use a 12-team, full-PPR redraft league as the baseline.

Obvious elite starters such as Josh Allen, Bijan Robinson, Ja’Marr Chase and Amon-Ra St. Brown do not need lengthy start/sit debates. The focus is on players closer to the decision line.

Carolina and Kansas City are on bye in Week 5, so managers relying on players from those teams will need replacements.

Thursday Night Football: Buccaneers at Cowboys

Week 5 begins with Tampa Bay visiting Dallas on Thursday night. The game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Baker Mayfield remains sidelined with a right thumb injury, and Tampa Bay has confirmed that rookie Jalon Daniels will make his second consecutive start. Daniels threw for 148 yards and a touchdown in his first NFL start while adding 55 rushing yards.

The Cowboys enter the game with several more dependable fantasy options. Dallas scored 34 points against Houston in Week 4, with Dak Prescott throwing for 355 yards and CeeDee Lamb catching the game-winning touchdown.

Start: Dak Prescott

Prescott is a strong Week 5 QB1 candidate. FantasyPros’ Week 5 quarterback rankings place him firmly inside the top tier for the week.

Call: Start in normal one-quarterback leagues.

Start: CeeDee Lamb

Lamb remains an automatic fantasy starter and is coming off a massive Week 4 performance against Houston.

Call: WR1. Keep him locked into lineups.

Start: George Pickens

Pickens remains part of a productive Dallas passing offense even when Lamb dominates the target count.

Call: WR2 / WR3 depending on league depth.

Start: Javonte Williams

Williams remains a useful fantasy starter in an offense capable of creating repeated scoring opportunities.

Call: RB2 with touchdown upside.

Start: Jake Ferguson

Ferguson remains involved in high-leverage passing situations and gives fantasy managers a viable Week 5 tight-end option.

Call: TE1.

Sit: Jalon Daniels

Daniels showed useful rushing ability in his debut, but a second career start on the road is not the spot to force him into standard one-quarterback lineups.

Call: Bench in one-QB leagues. Consider only as a lower-end QB2 in Superflex.

Daniels will continue starting while Mayfield recovers from his thumb injury. Tampa Bay’s official quarterback update has more information.

Week 5 Quarterback Start/Sit Picks

Start: Jared Goff at Cardinals

Goff has become one of the stronger fantasy quarterbacks through the opening month, and Week 5 gives him another attractive matchup.

DraftKings Network includes Goff among its Week 5 quarterback starts, while FantasyPros ranks him among the top quarterbacks for the week.

Call: Start as a QB1.

Start: Drake Maye vs. Raiders

Maye rebounded in Week 4 and now gets a home matchup with Las Vegas. FantasyPros places him inside its top-10 quarterback group for Week 5.

Call: Start in 12-team one-QB leagues if your normal starter is unavailable or has a difficult matchup.

Risky Start: Jalen Hurts at Jaguars

Hurts is difficult to bench because his rushing ability can rescue an otherwise quiet passing performance. The concern is the condition of Philadelphia’s offense.

Saquon Barkley is dealing with a hamstring injury, Tank Bigsby has been placed on injured reserve, and DeVonta Smith is also working back from a hamstring issue.

Call: Hurts remains usable in most leagues, but expectations should be lower than usual. Managers with another top-10 quarterback have a legitimate decision.

Injury Watch: Lamar Jackson at Falcons

Jackson suffered an ankle sprain in Week 4 and enters Week 5 with his availability uncertain.

If Jackson cannot go, Tyler Huntley is expected to start for Baltimore.

Call: Do not make a final lineup decision until Jackson’s status is clearer. Huntley would be a Superflex option rather than a preferred one-QB starter.

Follow the latest status through the Baltimore Ravens’ NFL page.

Week 5 Running Back Start/Sit Picks

Start Lean: Kyle Monangai at Packers

Monangai forced himself into the Week 5 conversation after receiving 30 carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns in Week 4.

D’Andre Swift’s role is not going to disappear automatically, but Monangai has earned continued opportunities. Green Bay has also been one of the more favorable fantasy matchups for running backs through four weeks.

Call: Start as an RB2 or flex in most 12-team leagues.

Conditional Start: Will Shipley vs. Jaguars

Philadelphia’s running-back injuries have created a possible path to significant Week 5 work for Shipley.

Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve, while Saquon Barkley is considered week-to-week with a hamstring injury. Shipley is therefore one of the most important players to monitor on Philadelphia’s practice reports.

Call: If Barkley is inactive, Shipley moves into the flex conversation. If Barkley plays without restrictions, Shipley belongs on the bench.

The Eagles officially placed Bigsby on injured reserve Tuesday.

Sit Lean: TreVeyon Henderson vs. Raiders

Henderson remains involved in New England’s backfield, but Rhamondre Stevenson has held the stronger role over the last two games.

DraftKings Network also lists Henderson among its Week 5 sits.

Call: Bench where you have a stable RB2 or flex alternative.

Week 5 Wide Receiver Start/Sit Picks

Start: Michael Wilson vs. Lions

Wilson’s recent production is supported by volume. He has drawn 30 targets across his last two games and now faces a Detroit defense that has allowed significant receiver production.

Sports Illustrated lists Wilson as its Week 5 start of the week at wide receiver.

Call: Start as a WR2.

Start: DK Metcalf vs. Colts

Metcalf has posted consecutive useful fantasy performances and is coming off five catches for 115 yards against Cleveland.

The Indianapolis matchup gives him another opportunity to remain involved as a downfield target.

Call: WR3 / flex with upside.

Start: Jameson Williams at Cardinals

Williams broke through in Week 4 with six catches for 102 yards. Detroit’s Week 5 game against Arizona carries another appealing scoring environment.

Call: Start as a WR3 or upside flex.

Sit Lean: Denzel Boston at Jets

Boston has shown genuine big-play ability through the opening month, but his production has depended heavily on touchdowns and explosive gains.

He has only 13 catches through four games, making the weekly floor less secure when those big plays do not arrive.

Call: Bench in normal 10- and 12-team leagues if you have another receiver with steadier target volume.

Week 5 Tight End Start/Sit Picks

Start: Isaiah Likely at Commanders

Likely received 12 targets in Week 4 and caught seven passes for 66 yards. That type of volume is difficult to ignore at tight end.

Washington has also been one of the more favorable fantasy matchups for the position.

Call: Start as a TE1 or strong streaming option.

Start: Harold Fannin Jr. at Jets

Fannin’s target and red-zone involvement have given him a useful fantasy floor through the opening month.

Call: Viable low-end TE1 in 12-team leagues.

Sit Lean: Dalton Kincaid at Rams

Kincaid started the season strongly but has caught only three passes across his last two games.

The Rams have also been difficult for opposing tight ends, making this a week where managers with a reliable alternative can consider moving Kincaid to the bench.

Call: Sit where a higher-volume option is available.

Week 5 Fantasy Football Sleepers

C.J. Stroud at Titans

Stroud delivered his strongest fantasy performance of the season in Week 4 and now draws Tennessee.

Best for: One-QB managers looking for a streamer and Superflex lineups.

Carnell Tate vs. Texans

Tate saw 12 targets in Week 4, catching nine passes for 145 yards. That kind of target volume gives him immediate sleeper appeal even before considering the matchup.

Best for: WR3 and flex decisions in deeper leagues.

Will Shipley vs. Jaguars

Shipley is the clearest injury-dependent sleeper. His value rises sharply if Barkley cannot play.

Best for: Managers who can wait for Philadelphia’s final injury status before setting the lineup.

Week 5 Injuries to Monitor

Lamar Jackson: An ankle sprain has put his Week 5 availability in doubt. Tyler Huntley is expected to start if Jackson is inactive.

Saquon Barkley: Considered week-to-week with a hamstring injury. His status directly affects Will Shipley’s fantasy value.

DeVonta Smith: Missed Week 4 because of a hamstring injury. His practice participation will matter for both his own outlook and the rest of Philadelphia’s passing game.

Tank Bigsby: Placed on injured reserve and unavailable for Week 5.

Baker Mayfield: Remains out with a dislocated right thumb. Jalon Daniels will start Thursday against Dallas.

Use the latest Week 5 injury report and team updates before making final lineup decisions.

Week 5 Close Calls

Jared Goff vs. Drake Maye: Start Goff. Both are usable, but Detroit’s matchup with Arizona gives Goff the stronger ceiling.

Kyle Monangai vs. TreVeyon Henderson: Start Monangai. His Week 4 workload gives him the more attractive path to touches.

Michael Wilson vs. DK Metcalf: Start Wilson in full PPR. His recent target volume provides the stronger floor.

Isaiah Likely vs. Dalton Kincaid: Start Likely. The recent volume strongly favors him.

Will Shipley vs. a normal flex starter: Wait for Barkley’s status. Shipley becomes far more attractive if Philadelphia rules Barkley out.

NFL Week 5 Start/Sit FAQs

Should I start Dak Prescott in Week 5?

Yes. Prescott is a strong QB1 option at home against Tampa Bay and enters Week 5 after throwing for 355 yards against Houston.

Should I start Jared Goff in Week 5?

Yes. Goff is one of the stronger quarterback starts of the week against Arizona and belongs in normal one-QB lineups.

Should I start Kyle Monangai?

Monangai is a reasonable RB2 or flex after his 30-carry Week 4 performance. D’Andre Swift remains part of the backfield, so another 30-touch workload should not be assumed.

Should I start Will Shipley?

Only if Saquon Barkley is inactive or clearly limited. Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve, which creates a much larger potential role for Shipley if Barkley cannot play.

Should I start Lamar Jackson?

If Jackson is active without a significant limitation, his rushing and passing ceiling normally makes him difficult to bench. His ankle injury makes this a situation to monitor closely before Sunday.

Who is a Week 5 wide receiver sleeper?

Carnell Tate is one option after drawing 12 targets and producing 145 receiving yards in Week 4.

Which teams are on bye in Week 5?

The Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs are on bye in Week 5.

Before lineup lock: Check final injury designations, inactive lists and your league’s scoring settings. Thursday players must be decided earlier than the rest of the Week 5 slate.
